Fake Institute, NCTE: The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has cancelled the recognition of 2224 teacher training institutes across the country. This is the biggest action in the history of NCTE so far. Also, students and parents have been advised to check the list of recognized institutes on the NCTE website before taking admission.

Why did NCTE take such a big step?

NCTE had started investigating the quality of teacher training institutes under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. During this, about 3000 institutes came under suspicion. Performance Appraisal Reports (PARs) for 2021-22 and 2022-23 were sought from them. Despite more than four months, of repeated emails and show cause notices, 2224 institutes did not respond. Therefore, NCTE cancelled their recognition. Investigation of some more institutes is going on and it is believed that a total of 2700 to 3000 institutes may be cancelled.

Fake Teacher Training Institutes: Which institutions were taken action against?

Most of the institutes whose recognition was cancelled were dummies or were running on the paper. Many of them had fake registrations. Students were registered in these institutes, but there were no classes, nor was there proper infrastructure. There were no professors or staff to teach. Some institutes were just doing the business of selling degrees. NCTE showed strictness after such complaints and brought out their truth through the performance appraisal report.

How many institutes are in which region?

NCTE has cancelled the recognition of institutes in different regions. This includes 872 institutes in the South Region, 686 institutes in the West Region, 637 institutes in the North Region, and 29 institutes in the East Region. Their complete list will be uploaded on NCTE's website ncte.gov.in by June 12, 2025.

What should students and parents do?

NCTE has warned that before taking admission to such institutions, check the list on the website. Many institutions are running only on paper, whose degrees may be useless. Be careful especially during the admission season, so that your money and time are not wasted. The website will have complete information about recognized and canceled institutions. If you are thinking of taking admission to a teaching course, then check the list of recognized institutions by visiting NCTE's website ncte.gov.in. Complete information will be uploaded on the website after June 12, 2025. Avoid such institutions whose infrastructure or teaching staff is questionable.

Role of National Education Policy

NEP 2020 mentions the recommendations of Justice J.S. Verma Commission, which states that many standalone teaching institutions do not pay attention to quality. It is the responsibility of NCTE to make the teacher education system high-level in the country. For this, a ban is being imposed on dummy institutes and degree sellers. The institutes are being investigated through performance appraisal reports. A high-level committee has been formed, which is analyzing these reports.

17 lakhs pass every year

Every year 7 lakh new teachers are needed in the country, but every year 17 lakh teachers are coming out from the existing institutes. NCTE says that quality matters more than numbers. Therefore, the institutes will have to provide basic facilities and quality teaching. New teaching courses will start in 2026, which will be based on practical and best practices. Institutes promoting getting degrees from home or dummy students are being monitored.

What will happen next?

Now the information about the institutes whose recognition will be canceled will be given to the general public through gazette notification. The institutes that have submitted PARs are also being investigated. Instructions for improvement will be given if deficiencies are found. New regulations and courses will be implemented in 2026, which will make teacher education even better.

This step of NCTE will stop the business of dummy institutes. Experts believe that teacher education is the backbone of the country's education system. If there is a lack in the training of teachers, it will affect schools and students. Therefore, it was necessary to take strict steps to prepare quality teachers.

Rein on dummy colleges.

This decision of NCTE is a big step towards improving teacher education. The cancellation of recognition of 2224 institutes will put a rein on dummy colleges. Students and parents are advised to check the list on NCTE's website before taking admission so that the future is secure. This step will not only prepare quality teachers, but will also strengthen the country's education system.
