The Uttar Pradesh government has amended the eligibility criteria for the recruitment of Trained Graduate Teachers (TGT) and Post Graduate Teachers (PGT) in aided secondary schools. According to a report published in INDIA TODAY, this has brought back biology as a subject in TGT recruitment and amended the eligibility rules for some PGT posts. As per the new instructions of Special Secretary Krishna Kumar Gupta, Biology has been restored as a subject for TGT recruitment in 4,512 aided secondary schools in Uttar Pradesh.

According to reports, candidates with graduation degree in biological sciences, especially Zoology and Botany and B.Ed degree are now eligible to apply for TGT Biology posts. The decision has opened up opportunities for all biology graduates who were previously excluded. With this amendment, there will be subject-specific eligibility criteria for TGT recruitment for 26 subjects at the current level and 42 subjects at the previous level.

Eligibility for PGT Geography, Civics

The government has tightened the eligibility requirements for some PGT posts. For PGT Geography, a post graduation degree specifically in Geography is now mandatory. For civics lecturer posts, only candidates with a PG degree in political science are eligible. Apart from the updation in Biology, Geography and Civics, there has been no significant change in the eligibility for other teaching subjects. The existing criteria for these posts will remain unchanged.

There will be separate categories for science teachers and biology teachers at the high school level, with different eligibility criteria for each. The new guidelines replace the earlier order of April 22. The eligibility criteria issued on September 9 are now effective, and the earlier rules have been repealed. Special Secretary Krishna Kumar Gupta issued the order, which was sent to all concerned officials, including the Director of Secondary Education and the Chairman of the Secondary Education Council.
