The budget for the financial year 2026-27 was released today, February 1, 2026. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget in Parliament for the ninth time. The education sector always attracts significant attention in the budget. This time, several new schemes have been implemented in the education budget.

What did the education sector receive?
India will be developed as a global bio-pharma manufacturing hub by establishing Bio Pharma Shakti with an expenditure of ₹10,000 crore over the next 5 years.

Three new institutions will be opened. Three new National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPERs) will be established. Seven existing NIPERs will be upgraded.
The focus was on AI applications and a youth-powered budget.

Ayush pharmacies will be upgraded. Veterinary and para-veterinary colleges will be established to increase the number of veterinary professionals to 20,000.

The National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited (NAFED) will focus on developing infrastructure in Tier 2 and 3 cities.

The establishment of 3 new All India Institutes of Ayurveda (AIIAs) was announced.
A girls' hostel will be built in every district of the country.
The capacity of district hospitals will be increased by 50% by establishing emergency and trauma care centers.

Assistance will be provided to open 5 private universities.
Announcement of assistance to states for establishing 5 regional medical hubs.
10,000 tourist guides will be trained for 20,000 iconic sites across the country.
The establishment of content creator labs in 15,000 secondary schools and 500 colleges across the country has been announced. This will boost India's Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics (AVGC) sector.

Professional support will be provided to CA, CS, and CMA institutions – ICAI, ICSI, and ICMAI. These were the focus areas in the Education Budget

This year's education budget is expected to increase further. Currently, only 2.8% to 3% of the total budget in our country is allocated to the education sector. However, according to experts and UNESCO, India should allocate up to 6 percent of its total GDP to the education budget.

The main goal of education will be to provide affordable education to all equally.
Along with improvements in medical and IIT infrastructure, an increase in the number of seats in these institutions is also expected this time.
According to the Economic Survey, promoting skill education in schools is essential for economic progress. New announcements and schemes are expected to be implemented in this regard.

The education budget has seen a continuous increase over the past 5 years. In the financial year 2021-22, the education budget was ₹93,000 crore, which has reached ₹1,28,650 crore by 2025-26. Key Highlights of Budget 2026

At 10:15 AM, a meeting of the Union Cabinet will be held under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister, where the budget will be formally approved. The Lok Sabha proceedings will begin at 11:00 AM. Following this, the Finance Minister will present the budget speech. The initial part of the speech will mention the government's achievements and key statistics. Between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM, the Finance Minister will hold a press conference to provide details of the major budget announcements.
