DU PhD Admission 2026: New rules for DU PhD admissions released; find out what score you need to secure a spot..
Delhi University (DU) has released the exam pattern and syllabus for direct PhD admission for students who have completed a four-year undergraduate (UG) course. This provision is intended for students who, during the fourth year of their undergraduate studies, have completed a dissertation, an academic project, or work related to entrepreneurship, but have not qualified for national-level examinations such as UGC-CSIR NET or GATE. The university has also established guidelines regarding eligibility, minimum CGPA, score distribution, and the interview process. The date for the examination will be announced later.
Opportunity for Four-Year UG Students
Only those students who have completed eight semesters under the University Grants Commission’s Curriculum and Credit Framework (UGCF-2022) are eligible to participate in this admission process. A minimum CGPA of 7.5 is required for candidates in the General category, while a minimum CGPA of 7.0 has been set for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Persons with Disabilities (PwD) categories. Furthermore, it is mandatory for students to have completed a dissertation, an academic project, or work related to entrepreneurship during their fourth year of undergraduate study. Students whose work was limited to translation tasks will not be considered eligible under this criterion.
Two-Hour Entrance Examination
The PhD entrance examination will carry a total of 100 marks, with a duration of two hours. The exam will consist of two sections: the first section will focus on Research Methodology, while the second section will cover questions related to the specific subject. Each section is worth 50 marks. For every incorrect answer, 25 percent of the marks allotted to that question will be deducted; therefore, candidates must prepare thoroughly and answer questions with care.
Minimum Marks Required for the Interview
To qualify for the interview, students in the General category must secure at least 50 percent marks in the entrance examination. For reserved categories, this threshold has been set at 45 percent. In the final selection, a weightage of 70 percent will be given to the entrance examination scores, and 30 percent to the interview. Before the interview, candidates will also be required to submit a report on their research or project.
Syllabus to vary by subject
Delhi University (DU) has prescribed a 'Research Methodology' course tailored to different disciplines. For candidates in Commerce, Humanities, Social Sciences, Psychology, and Home Science, the syllabus will be specific to their respective subjects. A separate curriculum has been defined for candidates in Science, Mathematics, Electronics, Information Technology (IT), and Computer Science.
Candidates should prepare by referring to the syllabus corresponding to their specific subject category. The university will announce the examination date and provide further instructions regarding the application process in due course. Candidates are advised to check the official DU website regularly for updates.
