The NEET UG re-examination was successfully conducted on June 21 amidst tight security. Now, all students are awaiting the results and the counseling process. If your NEET score is lower than expected, do not be disheartened. Even with a low score, there are numerous opportunities to secure an MBBS seat in a government medical college or build a career in other excellent medical courses. Let us understand how you should strategize if you have a low score.

What does a low NEET score mean?
Generally, a low score does not mean that all avenues are closed to you. Even if your marks do not meet the requirements for top institutions like AIIMS, PGIMER, or KGMU, you remain in the race for counseling. If you have cleared the 'qualifying cutoff' specific to your category, you are fully eligible to participate in the counseling process.

Looking at the trends from the previous year (2025), the qualifying score was 144 for the General category, 113 for OBC/SC/ST, and 127 for PwBD. If you fall within this range, you can participate in the counseling.

Some prominent government medical colleges are available with a lower rank
Seats often remain vacant in several government medical colleges even up to the final rounds of All India Quota (AIQ) and State Quota counseling. Based on trends from previous years, candidates from the General category have secured admission to these government colleges even with lower ranks:

AIIMS Madurai
Closing rank: approx. 16,728

Government Medical College, Amritsar
Closing rank: approx. 19,964

Government Medical College, Latur
Closing rank: approx. 20,588

Shaheed Hasan Khan Mewati Government Medical College
Closing rank: approx. 21,408

Late Baliram Kashyap Memorial Government Medical College, Jagdalpur
Closing rank: approx. 22,574

Government Medical College, Pali
Closing rank: approx. 23,302

Government Medical College, Firozabad
Closing rank: approx. 26,148

Agartala Government Medical College
Closing rank: approx. 27,001

What to do if you don't get an MBBS seat? Here are the best alternative courses
If your rank is lower and you are unable to secure an MBBS seat, there are several other popular and high-paying courses available for building a career in the medical field. You can consider admission to these:

AYUSH Courses
BAMS (Ayurveda), BHMS (Homeopathy), BUMS (Unani), BSMS (Siddha).

Paramedical and Nursing
BSc Nursing, BPT (Physiotherapy), BMLT (Medical Lab Technology).

Allied Health Sciences
BSc Radiology, BSc Optometry, BSc Operation Theatre Technology, BSc Nutrition and Dietetics.

Pharmacy
BPharma and DPharma.

Keep this in mind
During counseling, keep an eye on both the All India Quota (15%) and your state's State Quota (85%).
