Doctors' Salary Hike: The Himachal Pradesh government has announced great news for doctors. The state government has increased the salary of job trainee specialist doctors by 78 percent. Previously, the monthly salary for a job trainee medical officer (specialist) was ₹33,660; this has now been raised directly to ₹60,000. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has approved this decision. The government states that this step will help address the shortage of doctors in government hospitals and ensure better medical treatment for the public.

It is worth noting that job trainee medical officer specialists are doctors who have completed postgraduate (PG) specialist degrees—such as MD, MS, or DNB—and are appointed to work in government hospitals while undergoing training. Their role differs from that of general medical officers because they possess specialization in a specific field.

What was the previous salary, and why was it increased?

Regarding the previous salary structure, following the implementation of the 6th Pay Commission recommendations in 2022, the salary of trainee specialist doctors had been raised by approximately 24 percent—from ₹27,000 to ₹33,660. Although there was an increase at that time, doctors remained dissatisfied. Many doctors were reluctant to work in government hospitals due to the low pay, and a severe shortage of doctors was observed, particularly in hilly areas. Addressing this issue, the government has now decided to implement a significant salary hike.
