Distance learning in this subject will no longer be possible; the UGC has taken a tough stance, affecting millions of students.

The UGC has banned distance learning courses in psychology, impacting the careers of over 1.3 lakh students across the country.
Big news for students across the country. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has banned distance learning courses in psychology. This decision affects over 1.3 lakh students. This includes students currently pursuing undergraduate or postgraduate courses in psychology and those who already hold degrees in the subject. These students are now worried about the validity of their degrees and their ability to pursue further studies.
Reason for the Ban
The UGC took this step because psychology now falls under the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professionals (NCAHP). The NCAHP is a government body established in 2021 to oversee healthcare professions. Under this, the UGC's Distance Education Branch withdrew permission to universities that previously offered psychology distance courses.
Anxiety Increased Among Students and Teachers
This decision has caused considerable anxiety and confusion among students and teachers. Many universities that had been offering these courses for years are now upset by this sudden decision. Students are also concerned about the validity of their degrees and how this will affect their careers.
Dr. U.S. Pandey, former principal of Delhi University's School of Open Learning, says that the syllabus for distance courses is similar to that of regular courses, so discontinuing them is inappropriate. However, many experts believe that distance courses are not fully suitable for healthcare-related jobs.
Growing Popularity of Distance Courses
Distance courses in psychology have become increasingly popular in recent years. In 2020-21, 17 universities across the country offered these courses, which increased to 57 in 2024-25. Telangana and Tamil Nadu have the highest number of state universities offering these courses.
Experts believe this decision is against the National Education Policy (NEP). The NEP aims to make education accessible to all, but the ban on distance learning has adversely affected student convenience.
Student Problems
This decision has become a major concern for current students and graduates. Students are now worried about whether their degrees will be considered valid. Students who already have degrees in this subject may face difficulties in pursuing further studies or employment.
The Role of UGC and NCAHP
The establishment of NCAHP aims to ensure the quality and standards of health professionals. By bringing psychology under this board, the UGC has banned distance learning. However, instead of giving students time to consider this decision, it was implemented immediately, leaving students and teachers confused.
