Direct PhD Admission at Ranchi University; 75% Marks Required in Graduation
In accordance with the provisions of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and UGC Regulations 2022, Ranchi University has revised its PhD admission rules after nearly a decade and a half.
Ranchi University PhD Admission Rules: Ranchi University has implemented new rules for PhD admissions. Under the provisions of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and UGC Regulations 2022, the university has modified its PhD admission guidelines after approximately 15 years. According to the new rules, students who have secured 75% marks in a four-year undergraduate program will be eligible to apply directly for a PhD without completing a postgraduate degree. The university's Vice-Chancellor, Saroj Sharma, has issued a notification regarding the rules, minimum standards, and procedures for awarding the PhD degree.
Opportunity for Direct PhD Admission After 4-Year Graduation
Under Ranchi University's new rules, candidates who have secured at least 75% marks in a four-year undergraduate course can apply for a PhD. For such students, a postgraduate degree will not be mandatory for PhD admission. Additionally, candidates who have secured at least 55% marks in a two-year postgraduate course will also be eligible for the PhD program. Candidates belonging to reserved categories will be granted a 5% relaxation in the minimum eligibility marks.
Admission Through Entrance Exam and Interview
Under the new rules, PhD admission will be conducted through an entrance examination and an interview. A merit list for candidates appearing in the entrance exam will be prepared based on the marks obtained in both the exam and the interview. A weightage ratio of 70:30 has been set for the two components. In the PhD entrance test, half the questions will be based on research methodology, while the other half will pertain to the relevant subject. Candidates who have qualified for NET-JRF are exempted from the entrance examination; their selection will be based solely on the interview.
PhD Must Be Completed Within a Minimum of 3 and Maximum of 6 Years
Upon admission to the PhD program, researchers must complete coursework worth 12 credits. Only after this will they be able to proceed with their research process. The new regulations also lay down provisions regarding the duration of the PhD program. According to these rules, the minimum time required to complete a PhD is three years, while the maximum duration is set at six years. Researchers may re-register for an additional two years after this period; however, there is no provision for any further extension. Meanwhile, female researchers and those with a disability of more than 40 percent will be granted an additional two-year relaxation. Furthermore, the new regulations include a provision to grant female researchers up to 240 days of maternity or child-care leave.
