Delhi EWS Quota: Big News for Underprivileged Children in Delhi; Government Conducts Draw for Private School Admissions
The Delhi government aims to ensure that every poor and needy child gets the opportunity to study in a good private school. Consequently, the admission process has been made more transparent and streamlined this time around.
This comes as great news for poor and needy families in Delhi who dream of securing admission for their children in private schools. The Directorate of Education, Government of Delhi, has conducted a computerized draw for admissions into Nursery, KG, and Class 1 in private schools for the academic session 2026-27. This draw was conducted for the EWS (Economically Weaker Sections), DG (Disadvantaged Groups), and CWSN (Children with Special Needs) categories. Notably, the draw was conducted by Delhi’s Education Minister, Ashish Sood, during an event held at the Old Secretariat. During the event, several parents personally came up to the stage to press the button to initiate the draw.
What is the Government’s Plan?
According to the Education Minister, the Delhi government is committed to ensuring that every poor and needy child receives the opportunity to study in a reputable private school. He stated that the admission process has been made significantly more transparent and user-friendly this time compared to previous years. Applications were screened using Aadhaar-based technology. This measure has effectively curbed the practice of submitting multiple applications for a single child or providing false information. The government asserts that this initiative will ensure that the benefits reach the truly needy children.
Increased Seats in Schools
It is noteworthy that the number of seats available in private schools under this scheme has also increased this year. While 2,219 schools participated in the scheme last year, 2,308 schools have been included this time. The number of seats in the EWS and DG categories has risen to 48,092. Additionally, 7,609 seats have been reserved for the CWSN category. In total, 55,701 seats are available this year—an increase of 5,185 seats compared to the previous year.
How Many Applications Were Received?
According to official data, the government received over 139,000 applications this time. The majority of these applications were received under the EWS and DG categories. Furthermore, compared to the previous year, a higher number of families applied under the CWSN category as well. Keep These Points in Mind
The Education Department has clarified that once the draw has been conducted and the results have been finalized, no further changes will be made. Schools have been immediately allotted to the children who have been selected. The verification of documents is set to begin within the next three days. This time, several documents will be verified directly via mobile devices to ensure that parents do not have to make repeated trips to schools and administrative offices.
Reserved Seats for the Underprivileged
It is worth noting that this system has been operational in Delhi for several years. Under the Right to Education Act, approximately 25 percent of seats in private schools are reserved for children from economically weaker sections, disadvantaged groups, and those with special needs. In accordance with this regulation, schools are allotted to children every year through a draw system. This year, the government asserts that the entire process has been more transparent and streamlined than ever before.
