Cost of Studying Abroad: The trend of pursuing higher education abroad continues to grow among Indian students. Every year, lakhs of students head overseas in search of a bright future. However, studying abroad is not within everyone’s budget. According to various reports analyzing global educational costs, there are several countries where obtaining an education is an extremely expensive endeavor.

People often assume that only professional courses—such as medicine or engineering—come with exorbitant, multi-crore price tags. In reality, however, in these countries, Indian students may end up spending lakhs or even crores of rupees annually—covering both tuition fees and living expenses—just to pursue a standard BA or other undergraduate degree.

The United States ranks first; the costs could drain your pockets.

The United States is considered the most expensive country in the world for higher education. Both public and private universities in the U.S. have a very high fee structure. On average, an international student in the U.S. can expect to spend between $20,000 and $45,000 annually on tuition alone. In Indian currency, this amounts to approximately ₹20 lakh to ₹40 lakh per year.

Since an undergraduate degree in the U.S. typically spans four years, the total cost to complete a BA degree can reach anywhere from ₹80 lakh to ₹2 crore. Furthermore, in major cities like New York or Los Angeles, monthly living expenses—covering accommodation and food—can range from ₹1 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh.

Education in Australia and the UK is Also Extremely Expensive

Australia and the United Kingdom rank second and third, respectively, in terms of the high cost of education. In Australia, annual tuition fees for international students range from 20,000 to 45,000 Australian dollars—which, in Indian currency, translates to approximately 15 lakh to 30 lakh rupees per year for college tuition alone.

A three-year BA degree there requires a budget of 45 lakh to 90 lakh rupees. In the UK, annual fees for bachelor’s degree programs typically range between 15 lakh and 25 lakh rupees. When the cost of living is added to tuition—especially in cities like London—the total annual expenditure can easily exceed 30 lakh rupees.

The Situation in Canada and New Zealand is Similarly Costly

Canada and New Zealand occupy the fourth and fifth positions. While Canada may offer some relief compared to the United States, international students there still face annual tuition fees ranging from 15 lakh to 25 lakh rupees. Furthermore, recent changes to the Canadian government’s regulations regarding living expenses have made residing there even more expensive for students.

Similarly, in New Zealand, the combined annual cost for education and health insurance ranges from approximately 16 lakh to 25 lakh rupees—a substantial sum for a middle-class Indian family.
