Changes to the UPTET 2026 Notification: Both Teaching Teachers and Current Students Can Now Apply—Check the Details Here..
UPTET 2026: The application process for the Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test (UPTET) 2026 is set to commence on March 27. Before this, the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC) had introduced significant changes to the UPTET 2026 notification. In this regard, the UPESSC issued a corrigendum yesterday. Consequently, both currently practicing teachers and students pursuing relevant courses are now eligible to apply for UPTET 2026. The deadline for submitting applications is April 26, while the examination is tentatively scheduled to be held on July 2, 3, and 4, 2026.
Let us delve into the details regarding the changes made to the UPTET 2026 notification. What prompted the UPESSC to modify the UPTET 2026 notification? Furthermore, we will explore how many individuals—specifically, how many candidates—stand to benefit from these changes.
UPTET Returns After 4 Years; 1.5 Million Candidates Await
The UPTET notification was officially released by the UPESSC on March 20. While the UPTET notification had been issued on several previous occasions, the examination could not be conducted despite the announcement of exam dates. Previously, 1.5 million candidates had applied for UPTET. Now, the UPESSC has issued a fresh notification for UPTET. It is widely believed that this time, the UPTET will definitely be conducted. If this materializes, the UPTET will be held after a hiatus of over four years; the examination was last conducted in 2022.
Changes Introduced in the UPTET 2026 Notification
On Tuesday, March 24, the UPESSC issued a corrigendum to the UPTET 2026 notification. Following this revised notification from the UPESSC, teachers who have not yet qualified for the TET (Non-TET teachers), as well as students currently in their final year of teacher training courses, will now be eligible to apply for UPTET 2026.
The Supreme Court's Verdict
The UPESSC's decision to amend the UPTET 2026 notification aligns with a ruling by the Supreme Court. Specifically, in September 2025, the Supreme Court mandated the TET qualification as a requirement for all practicing teachers. Failure to comply with this mandate could jeopardize teachers' promotions and job security. However, the UP government has filed a review petition in the Supreme Court regarding this matter. Furthermore, in a 2022 order, the Supreme Court granted an exemption allowing students in their final year of teacher training courses—pursued at institutions recognized by the NCTE—to apply for the TET.
Applicant Count Could Rise by Up to 5 Lakh
The changes introduced by the UPESSC in the UPTET 2026 notification are set to directly benefit approximately 5 lakh candidates. In reality, there are about 2 lakh teachers in Uttar Pradesh who have not yet qualified the TET. Additionally, there are over 3 lakh students currently in the final year of various teacher training courses. Consequently, if all these candidates choose to apply for UPTET 2026, the total number of applications could see an increase of 5 lakh. Last year, 15 lakh candidates applied; given the current scenario, the total number of applicants this year could potentially reach 20 lakh.
