The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has taken a major decision. Now, students in grades 6 to 8 in CBSE-affiliated schools will also receive skill education. Under the CBSE guidelines, students in grades 6 to 8 will be compulsorily provided with skill education. Following this, CBSE schools will prioritize practical work, along with examinations, in evaluating students in these grades. The National Council of Education and Research Training (NCERT) has developed textbooks for skill education.

Let's explore the plan for teaching skill education to students in grades 6 to 8 in CBSE schools. Which NCERT textbooks are being implemented?

Skills like daily engineering work will be taught.
The CBSE has decided to provide skill education to students in grades 6 to 8. Under this decision, CBSE school students will be taught skills like plant care, animal care, and daily engineering work.

Students will receive practical knowledge.
The objective of this CBSE decision is to provide students with practical knowledge in addition to traditional subjects. Under this initiative, CBSE schools will teach students academics as well as real-life tasks. A Skill Fair will be organized annually, where students will showcase their skill projects, models, and experiences. Overall, the CBSE has taken this decision under the New Education Policy 2020.

NCERT Books to be Implemented, Teachers to Receive Training
CBSE will implement the Skill Bodh series of books prepared by NCERT to provide skills education to students in grades 6 to 8. These books are available in print and digital formats. Teachers will also receive training in teaching skills education.

Two Periods to be Taught Every Week
Students in grades 6 to 8 in CBSE schools will receive two consecutive periods of instruction each week. Under the plan, students will receive 110 hours (160 periods) of skills education annually. In this scenario, two periods will be taught each week. Under skill education, students will be required to complete projects. Students will be required to complete a total of nine projects over three years, from grades 6 to 8. This includes 270 hours of practical work.

Skill education will be evaluated separately.
