While CBSE had previously exempted students in Classes 7, 8, and 9 from the requirement of taking board exams in three languages, Class 6 students were initially excluded from this exemption; this meant that current Class 6 students were expected to study three languages ​​and eventually appear for the Class 10 board exam covering them. Consequently, for students currently in Class 6, the Class 10 board exam would have been the first instance where the three-language policy applied to their assessment.

A petition regarding this matter was filed in the Supreme Court. During earlier hearings, the Court had expressed concern over introducing a new language framework for students midway through their schooling. In this context, a suggestion was made to the Supreme Court to implement the policy gradually—via a "soft launch"—starting from 2027. In a recent development, the Supreme Court has exempted students currently in Class 6 from the three-language policy. While they may continue studying three languages, they will not be required to take the Class 10 board examination in these three languages, nor will they be prevented from advancing to the next grade on this account.
