Under the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE 2023), the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is implementing the new CBSE Third Language Policy 2026 from the next session, i.e., 2027-28. According to this rule, it is now mandatory for all students from Class 6 onward to study two Indian languages ​​along with one foreign language.

English is considered a foreign language.
According to the new rule, English will be considered a third language. Students will be able to choose English as a foreign language along with two Indian languages. If a student studies French, German, or any other foreign language, learning two Indian languages ​​will also be mandatory.

Goal to include it in board exams by 2031
CBSE will implement this rule from Class 6 onwards in the next session. After this, a roadmap is being prepared to extend it to Class 10 by 2031. In this context, CBSE will include a third language in the board exams in 2031.

New books will be prepared.
The new rule will come into effect from the next semester, and CBSE will develop curriculum/books for the third language. Starting in the first semester, CBSE will prepare books for nine languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Gujarati, and Bengali. Books will also be prepared for other Indian and foreign languages.
