CBSE Exams Cancelled in West Asia: Amidst rising tensions and war-like conditions in West Asia (the Middle East), dark clouds loom over the future of Indian students residing there. Citing security reasons, the CBSE has cancelled Class 10 and 12 examinations across seven Gulf nations: the UAE, Iran, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. While the CBSE Board has provided clarity regarding the formula for Class 10 results, Class 12 students remain in limbo.

Approximately 23,000 students studying in Indian schools—spanning from Sharjah to Dubai—are facing uncertainty regarding their results. The CBSE Class 10 results will be declared based on the average scores obtained in the papers that the students have already attempted. However, Class 12 students are anxious about how their scorecards will appear without having completed the full set of examinations. Students fear that a lack of clarity—reminiscent of the COVID-19 era—could become a stumbling block in their path toward college admissions. Read on to understand the impact of this CBSE decision on students and how the evaluation process will be conducted.

Average Formula for Class 10; Class 12 Awaits

The CBSE Class 10 results will be compiled based on the papers that students have already taken. The scores for the remaining papers will be determined by calculating the average of the subjects in which the student secured the highest marks. However, suspense currently persists regarding the evaluation methodology for Class 12. The Board states that it is assessing the situation and will reach a decision shortly.

The Future of 23,000 Students is at Stake

According to statistics, approximately 29,000 students were registered for Class 10 and 23,000 students for Class 12 across these seven affected nations in West Asia. The UAE alone hosts the highest number—110—of CBSE-affiliated schools, where thousands of students are currently anxious about their plans. School principals in Sharjah and Dubai state that students were also preparing for examinations such as CUET UG and KEAM exams over which clouds of uncertainty now loom.

Memories of the COVID Era Resurface
Such a major disruption to board examinations was previously witnessed in 2020 and 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, the Board resorted to an ‘averaging system,’ while in 2021, internal assessments—along with scores from the 10th and 11th grades—served as the basis for evaluation. CBSE board examinees fear that history is repeating itself; however, this time, the cause is not a health crisis, but war.

Concerns Regarding Admissions and Competitive Exams
This year is pivotal for 12th-grade students, as they are required to apply to universities both within the country and abroad. The National Testing Agency (NTA) maintains examination centers in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah; however, due to the prevailing tensions, students remain uncertain as to whether these examinations will be conducted on schedule. For the time being, schools are planning to resume classes in an online mode following the spring break.
