CBSE Changes Rules: Facility to Pass via an Additional Subject Revoked for Students Caught Cheating in Board Exams..
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 12 board examinations are currently underway. Amidst this, information has emerged regarding a significant change in CBSE's regulations concerning cheating, signaling that the Board has now adopted a stricter stance on the matter. CBSE has delivered a subtle yet severe blow to students caught cheating. The Board has decided to revoke the provision allowing such students to pass by substituting a failed subject with an additional subject. This new rule will come into effect starting from the academic session 2025-26.
Let us understand the full scope of this issue. What was the protocol previously for students caught cheating? What consequences must students now face if caught engaging in malpractice? Let us examine the entire matter in detail.
Provision to Pass via a Sixth or Seventh Subject in Cases of Cheating
Until now, CBSE has maintained a lenient policy regarding cheating. Under this system, if a student appearing for the Class 10 or 12 board examinations was caught cheating or using unfair means in a specific subject, their answer sheet for that subject would be confiscated.
However, students were granted the option to pass by utilizing a sixth or seventh additional subject. By passing the additional subject, students could substitute it for the subject in which they had cheated. Consequently, even if caught cheating, a student's overall board result would not be adversely affected. This provision applied only in instances where a student was caught cheating in a single subject.
Examination Cancelled for Cheating; Re-examination Mandatory
Under CBSE's new regulatory framework, if a student is caught cheating in any subject during the board examinations, their answer sheet for that subject will be confiscated. Furthermore, the examination for that specific subject will be cancelled for the student in question.
In such circumstances, the student will be required to retake the examination. CBSE has explicitly clarified that any student caught cheating must appear for a 'Compartment Examination' in that particular subject. In essence, CBSE has now adopted a zero-tolerance policy regarding cheating. From now on, if a student is caught cheating, their examination for that subject will be cancelled, and they will be required to appear for the examination again.
