CBSE Board's big change: you will not be able to choose an additional subject without the school's approval.

CBSE New Rules: CBSE has implemented new rules on additional subjects. Now, only 2 additional subjects will be allowed in class 10 and 1 additional subject in class 12.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made a big change regarding the 10th and 12th board examinations. Now, students will not have complete freedom in choosing additional subjects. According to the new rules, only 2 additional subjects will be allowed in class 10 and only 1 additional subject in class 12. Not only this, the selected subjects will have to be studied continuously for two years; only then will the students be able to give the board exam of that subject. Students of schools that have not taken approval from CBSE for any subject will not be allowed to choose that subject.
Rules on additional subjects
CBSE has also made guidelines for additional subjects. Class 10 students will be able to take only 2 additional subjects apart from 5 main subjects. Whereas in class 12, only 1 additional subject will be allowed.
Just choosing the subject will not be enough. Students will have to study these subjects for two consecutive years. That is, for class 10, it will be necessary to study both 9th and 10th years. Similarly, for class 12, the subject will have to be studied in both 11th and 12th years. Only then will they be allowed to include that subject in the board exam.
School permission and facilities are necessary
The board has also made it clear that any school can offer additional subjects only if it has the permission of the board. Also, the school should have teachers, labs and other necessary facilities for that subject. If a school has not taken permission or does not have the resources, then the students will not be able to choose that subject in the exam.
Options for Compartmental and Essential Repeat Students
If a student fails in an additional subject in his/her final year and is placed in the Compartmental or Essential Repeat category, he/she can appear for the exam again as a private candidate.
Private candidates do not need to join any school. They can study at home and directly appear for the board exam. This option is helpful for students who want to get a second chance.
