CBSE: AI will digitally evaluate answer sheets, and will now recognize even poor handwriting and award correct marks..
Now, answer sheets for board and competitive exams will be evaluated using artificial intelligence (AI). The accuracy of digital evaluation is 95%, while that of teacher evaluation is 92%, meaning there will be minimal errors in AI evaluation. The CBSE board has announced digital evaluation for this year's 10th board exam.
Many educational institutions, including IITs and NITs, are testing digital evaluation in small groups before implementing it. IIIT Bangalore has already implemented it. The National Testing Agency (NTA) is also conducting digital evaluation for national entrance exams, including JEE Main, NEET, CUET, and other national exams. The goal is to detect errors and award marks for correct answers.
The India AI Impact Summit, held recently at Bharat Mandapam in Delhi, showcased the transformation AI can bring to education. Preparations are underway to implement digital evaluation, independent of human intervention, in school and higher education. Following the CBSE board, a nationwide debate has erupted on digital evaluation. In the age of AI, some have called it a threat to teachers' jobs, while others have praised it.
AI can understand even messy handwriting. Tomesh Jain, head of CodeCentra, stated that they have developed a digital evaluation technology that will benefit students the most. Previously, students with clear and good handwriting received good marks without any problems. However, teachers often found it difficult to understand students' answers, resulting in deductive marks.
According to a report, teacher behavior also plays a role in evaluation. Some teachers award good marks even when the handwriting is poor and the answers are poorly written. Others deducted marks for poor handwriting and unskilled answers. Now, with AI evaluation, handwriting and teacher behavior will no longer be important, as AI will understand and award marks even when handwriting is poor and answers are poorly written.
Two-Way Evaluation
Two-Way Evaluation: This involves digital evaluation first, followed by verification by teachers. After the teacher's verification, the evaluation will then be conducted by AI. If the teacher deducts marks, the AI can highlight the error and question whether the marks were deducted incorrectly. Evaluation is possible for both online computer-based exams and offline, i.e., answer sheets written on paper.
