CBSE: 5 compulsory subjects required for Class 10; skill subject will serve as a safety net..
There is important news for students currently in Class 9 under the CBSE board. For these students, the 2028 CBSE Class 10 board examination will consist of five compulsory subjects (standard papers). Additionally, students will have the option to choose an extra skill-based subject. This skill subject could also prove helpful in the event that a student fails in Mathematics, Science, or Social Science.
CBSE Board’s Announcement
Clarifying the new examination pattern, the CBSE outlined two pathways for vocational education on Thursday. Students can choose between 'school-based assessment' and a board examination that leads to a 'nationally recognized skill certificate.' This specifically applies to students currently in Class 9 during the 2026-27 academic session, who will appear for their Class 10 board examinations in 2028.
Extension of the Nandan Nilekani Task Force’s Tenure
The Central Government has extended the tenure of the task force on examination reforms, chaired by Nandan Nilekani, until January 2027. Before the panel finalizes its recommendations, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) intends to hold consultations with Chief Ministers and Chief Secretaries. This six-member panel was constituted to bring transparency to the examination system following the NEET-UG controversy.
The panel’s primary focus is on distributing examination responsibilities among different agencies, establishing secure, government-controlled testing centers in every district, and creating a 'common exam calendar' for organizations such as the NTA, SSC, and IBPS to prevent clashes between examination dates.
