Career: Who gets scholarship money at IITs? It ranges from ₹90,000 per month to ₹3 lakh per year..
IIT Scholarship 2026: Securing admission to an IIT is a dream for lakhs of students across the country. While students work hard for national-level entrance exams like JEE Advanced, GATE, and JAM, the benefits of achieving a high rank extend beyond mere admission. Many IITs offer substantial scholarships and fellowships to their top-ranking students. The amounts and terms for these financial aids vary; some offer annual assistance worth lakhs based on JEE Advanced rankings, while others provide monthly fellowships of up to ₹90,000 to top GATE rankers during their PhD studies. In this context, IIT Kharagpur has announced a special fellowship to mark its Platinum Jubilee year. Meanwhile, IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee, and IIT Delhi are also providing financial assistance to meritorious students through various schemes.
IIT Kharagpur: Up to ₹90,000 per month
IIT Kharagpur is celebrating its Platinum Jubilee this year. To mark the completion of 75 years since its inception, the institute is organizing various activities that highlight its contributions to education, research, and innovation. As part of these celebrations, IIT Kharagpur has launched the 'Director Platinum Jubilee Excellence Fellowship' (DPEF 2026). This fellowship aims to encourage candidates who have excelled in national-level entrance exams to pursue higher education and research. Under this scheme, candidates who secure a rank within the top 50 in GATE 2026 and opt to pursue a PhD at IIT Kharagpur are eligible for special financial assistance. Selected candidates will receive a monthly fellowship of ₹80,000 for the first two years. Subsequently, the amount will increase to ₹90,000 per month for the next three years, subject to the candidate fulfilling all prescribed eligibility criteria for PhD admission at IIT Kharagpur. There is no need to apply separately for this fellowship. Eligible candidates can apply through the institute's ongoing (rolling) PhD admission process.
**Benefits for Top 50 JAM Rankers Too**
IIT Kharagpur has not limited the scope of the DPEF scheme solely to GATE. Candidates securing ranks between 1 and 50 in JAM 2026 can also avail benefits under this scheme, provided they opt to pursue a master's degree at IIT Kharagpur. Thus, to mark its Platinum Jubilee, IIT Kharagpur has extended merit-based financial assistance beyond JEE Advanced to include top performers in GATE and JAM as well. Notably, the fellowship provided under this scheme for PhD studies reaches up to ₹90,000 per month.
IIT Kanpur also offers significant financial assistance to students who secure excellent ranks in JEE Advanced. The institute's 'Bright Minds Scholarship' is among the key merit-based scholarships awarded to top JEE Advanced rankers. This scholarship is available to students who rank within the top 100 in the JEE Advanced All India Rankings and enroll in IIT Kanpur's B.Tech or B.S. programs. Selected students receive a scholarship of ₹3 lakh annually. This financial support can continue throughout the four-year undergraduate program, provided the student maintains a minimum CPI of 8.0 each year. According to an Indian Express report, out of the ₹3 lakh amount provided by IIT Kanpur, ₹2 lakh is allocated to cover the full tuition fee. The remaining ₹1 lakh covers hostel and mess charges, books, medical insurance, and other living expenses. The objective behind launching this scholarship is to ensure that financial constraints do not hinder the education of students who have excelled in JEE Advanced.
**IIT Roorkee: ₹25,000 per month for top 250 JEE Advanced rankers**
IIT Roorkee also offers a special scholarship for top JEE Advanced rankers. The institute's James Thomason Scholarship is awarded to students who secure a high rank in the JEE Advanced examination. According to IIT Roorkee's official scholarship guidelines, students who secure an All India Rank (AIR) of up to 250 in JEE Advanced and enroll at IIT Roorkee are eligible for this scholarship. Under this scheme, students receive ₹25,000 per month for the entire duration of the program; however, maintaining good academic performance is mandatory for the scholarship to continue. Students are required to maintain a CGPA of 8.0 or higher at the end of each academic year. Consequently, this is not merely a one-time financial aid provided at the time of admission; the student's ongoing academic performance is crucial for the continuation of the scholarship.
₹10 Crore Endowment for Top 5 Students at IIT Delhi
IIT Delhi has also received a separate endowment of ₹10 crore from its alumnus, Dr. Amit Sinha. The objective is to launch full-ride fellowships for the top five undergraduate students—selected based on JEE Advanced rankings—who enroll at the institute each year. One of these five fellowships is reserved for the top female JEE ranker enrolling at IIT Delhi, aiming to encourage women to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Thus, IIT Delhi is focusing not only on merit but also on financial need and increasing women's participation in STEM.
