Important news has emerged for teachers appointed in primary schools based on B.Ed. Degrees. If these teachers do not complete the mandatory NIOS bridge course, their jobs could be in jeopardy. This course has been made mandatory following the Supreme Court directives. The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) has now launched an online registration portal for this six-month bridge course. Teachers appointed based on B.Ed. Degrees will be required to complete this course within the stipulated timeframe to maintain their eligibility.

Which teachers are required to complete this bridge course?
This six-month bridge course, initiated by NIOS, is mandatory for teachers who have been appointed as primary teachers (classes 1 to 5) based on their B.Ed. Qualifications between June 28, 2018, and August 11, 2023. All B.Ed.-qualified teachers appointed during this period will be required to complete this course to retain their jobs. Failure to complete this course could result in the loss of their eligibility as a primary teacher.

Where and how to register?
Online registration for this course is available on the bridge.nios.ac.in portal. The portal was launched by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on the occasion of the 36th Foundation Day of NIOS. During registration, teachers will be required to upload their appointment letter and a self-declaration certificate certified by the principal. These documents will determine whether a teacher is eligible for the course.

Did the course begin after a Supreme Court order?
On August 11, 2023, the Supreme Court, in a significant decision, stated that B.Ed. Degree holders are not fully qualified to teach at the primary level, as their training is at the secondary and higher secondary levels. Following this, the court directed the NCTE to develop a special bridge course for such teachers. This course was developed under this order and is now implemented.

Course Objective and Technical Support
The primary objective of this bridge course is to specifically train B.Ed. Qualified teachers to teach at the primary level. This will also improve the quality of education for children. Teachers can contact bridgesupport@nios.ac.in for any technical issues or information. This course, approved by the Ministry of Education, is considered extremely important for both teachers and students.
