Captain or Major: Which rank is higher in the Indian Army? Find out who gets a higher salary..
Indian Army Captain vs. Major Salary: Young people aspiring to become officers in the Indian Army often wonder about the different ranks and their respective salaries. Captain and Major are two such important officer ranks in the Indian Army. But do you know which rank is higher and which one commands a higher salary? If not, let us find out which is the senior rank and what the salary difference is between the two.
Who is senior: Captain or Major?
In the Indian Army, the rank of Major is senior to that of a Captain. Naturally, the responsibilities of a Major are greater than those of a Captain. Consequently, a Major receives a higher salary than a Captain. Furthermore, in the Pay Matrix, the Major's level is placed above that of the Captain. Under the current Army pay structure, a Captain is placed at Pay Level 10B, while a Major is at Pay Level 11.
What is a Captain's salary?
An Indian Army Captain's basic pay is ₹61,300. In addition, they receive ₹15,500 as Military Service Pay (MSP). They are also paid a Dearness Allowance (DA) amounting to 60% of the (Basic Pay + Military Service Pay), which comes to ₹46,080.
Additionally, a House Rent Allowance (HRA) of ₹18,390 is provided (based on 'X-City' classification). A further ₹11,520 is paid, comprising the Transport Allowance and the DA applicable to it. When all these components are added up, a Captain's gross salary comes to approximately ₹1,52,790.
Subsequently, an income tax deduction of approximately ₹13,580 is made under the applicable tax regime. Based on this, the in-hand salary before DSOP/AFPP deductions comes to approximately ₹1,39,210.
It is important to note that this calculation is based on a specific salary structure and an 'X-City' posting scenario. The actual salary may vary depending on the officer's posting, applicable allowances, and other deductions. Central government rules regarding pay and allowances are also subject to periodic revision.
What is the salary of an officer with the rank of Major?
Let us now look at the salary of an officer holding the rank of Major; their basic pay is ₹69,400. This means the starting basic pay is higher than that of a Captain (which is ₹61,300). Additionally, a Major receives a Military Service Pay (MSP) of ₹15,500. Furthermore, Dearness Allowance (DA)—calculated at 60% of the sum of Basic Pay and Military Service Pay—amounts to ₹50,940. For an 'X-City' posting, House Rent Allowance (HRA) of ₹20,820 is included, along with ₹11,520 comprising Transport Allowance (TA) and the DA applicable to it.
Adding these components together results in a gross salary of approximately ₹1,68,180 for a Major. Subsequently, ₹16,781 is deducted as income tax under the applicable tax regime. Thus, the in-hand salary before DSOP/AFPP deductions stands at approximately ₹1,51,399.
