CA Course: How many years does it take to become a CA? What is the process after the 12th grade?
CA Course: For the millions of young people in the country with a commerce background, the ultimate dream is to prefix 'CA'—meaning Chartered Accountant—to their names. The role of a CA is considered one of the most respected, prestigious, and lucrative professions in the country. Whether it is a major multinational corporation or the Government of India's tax department, hardly any significant decision is made without the advice of a CA. However, for all the glamour associated with this career, there is often confusion regarding the study process and the time required to complete it.
People often say that becoming a CA consumes one's entire youth or liken the process to a "five-year plan." But is that really the case? In reality, thanks to periodic changes introduced by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), the structure of the CA course has become much more streamlined and slightly shorter than before. If you pass the CA exams without any failed attempts, you can qualify as a CA at a very young age. Here is a breakdown of the CA course.
How many years does it take to become a CA?
If you begin your CA studies immediately after passing Class 12 and clear every exam on your first attempt without failing, it will take approximately 4.5 to 5 years to become a CA. Under the ICAI's new scheme, the duration of the training (articleship) has been reduced, allowing students to obtain their CA qualification sooner than before.
First Stage: CA Foundation
This is the entry point for the CA course. Students can register for it after appearing for their Class 12 examinations.
Duration: It requires approximately four months of study.
Exam: It consists of four papers covering fundamental subjects such as Accounts, Law, Mathematics, and Economics. You can proceed to the next level only after passing this stage.
Second Stage: CA Intermediate
Students advance to the CA Intermediate level after passing the CA Foundation exam. Graduates can also enter this level directly (Direct Entry).
Duration: At least 8 months are available for preparation.
New Rule: Previously, the Intermediate level consisted of 8 papers; however, under the new syllabus, there are only 6 papers, divided into two groups of three. Additionally, students must complete mandatory training in Information Technology and Soft Skills (ICITSS).
Third Stage: Practical Training (Articleship)
After passing both groups of the CA Intermediate exam, the most crucial part of the CA course begins: 'Articleship.' This involves learning real-world work under the guidance of a registered CA firm.
Duration: Under the new rules, the articleship duration has been reduced from 3 years to 2 years—a significant relief. During this period, students receive a monthly stipend in exchange for their work and learning.
Final Stage: CA Final
After completing the 2-year articleship and Advanced Training (AICITSS), you reach the final and most challenging stage of the CA course: the CA Final.
Examination: According to the new syllabus, the CA Final also consists of only 6 papers. Upon passing these rigorous exams, you officially become a 'Chartered Accountant,' and the ICAI grants you its prestigious membership.
However, there is no fixed timeframe for completing the CA course; many young aspirants take several years to finish it.
