The Merchant Navy offers young people a career path that combines working at sea with good earnings and opportunities for advancement. Since a significant portion of global trade relies on maritime routes, there is a constant demand for trained personnel in this sector. After completing Class 12, students can enter this field by pursuing courses related to the deck, engine, electrical, or rating departments based on their interests. The primary function of the Merchant Navy is to transport goods and passengers between locations using commercial vessels.

This involves the maritime transport of commodities such as oil, grain, vehicles, and other essential goods. It is important to distinguish this from the Indian Navy; while the Indian Navy is dedicated to national security and defense, the Merchant Navy operates within the commercial sector.

What courses can one pursue?
To join the Merchant Navy, one must first select a course that aligns with their interests and qualifications. The 'GP Rating' course is an entry-level option available after Class 10 or 12; it has a duration of approximately six months and allows one to begin working in the deck or engine departments.

If you are interested in ship navigation and operations, you can pursue a Diploma or B.Sc. in Nautical Science. This leads to a career starting as a Deck Cadet, with promotions to officer ranks following the acquisition of experience and the clearing of mandatory examinations.

Students with an aptitude for machinery and technical work can opt for a B.Tech. in Marine Engineering, which is typically a four-year course. Candidates with a background in electrical or electronics engineering can also build a career as Electro-Technical Officers (ETOs).

How to get a job and what is the salary?
In addition to the course, candidates must meet medical fitness standards and obtain necessary maritime certifications. Selection follows through direct applications to recognized shipping companies or via campus placements. Initial monthly earnings range from approximately ₹30,000 to ₹60,000, depending on the position and the company. With increasing experience, the salary can rise to between ₹1 lakh and ₹3 lakh or even higher. Earnings in senior positions such as Captain or Chief Engineer can reach several lakh rupees per month.
