BLO Salary: How much work pressure do BLOs face preparing voter lists? They perform four important tasks for just ₹12,000..
BLO Salary: The foundation of Indian democracy is the voter list, and Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are responsible for maintaining this list. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are the Election Commission's lowest-ranking but most important employees. They are assigned to a specific polling booth. Their job isn't just to ensure voting on election day, but they also go door-to-door throughout the year to ensure that all eligible voters are included in the list and that incorrect names are removed.
BLOs form a direct bridge between the Election Commission and your home. Often, school teachers, Anganwadi workers, or other government employees perform the crucial duties of BLOs. Adding new names to the voter list, removing names of people who have died or moved, and correcting information such as addresses are all part of a BLO's job. However, they have to perform this work alongside their primary job, which increases their workload and stress.
Who are BLOs and how are they appointed?
A BLO is an officer working at the polling station (booth) level. They are appointed by the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) with the approval of the District Election Officer (DEO) on the instructions of the Election Commission of India. Central or state government employees (such as teachers, patwaris/lekhpals, Anganwadi workers, etc.) are typically appointed as BLOs.
What do BLOs do?
The primary function of a BLO is to ensure that the voter list in their assigned constituency is always error-free:
Door-to-door verification: They go door-to-door to identify new voters over 18, transferred voters, and deceased voters.
List update: They process and verify applications for addition (Form 6), deletion (Form 7), and correction (Form 8) to the voter list.
Public awareness: They educate voters about the voting process and voter registration.
Polling station management: They play a crucial role in ensuring arrangements at their booth on election day.
What is the salary of a BLO?
This work is assigned to BLOs in addition to their main government job. Therefore, they are paid an honorarium, not a salary.
Annual Honorarium: The Election Commission has increased the minimum annual honorarium of BLOs from ₹6,000 to ₹12,000.
Incentives: They are also given additional incentives ranging from ₹2,000 to ₹6,000 for additional work performed during major campaigns like the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
Why are BLOs in the news?
BLOs are currently in the news due to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign, which mandates voter verification. They are under immense pressure to go door-to-door to fill out forms in a short time, match names with the old 2002-2004 voter list, and enter this data into an online portal. There have also been sad reports of some BLOs committing suicide due to excessive work pressure, raising serious concerns about their workload and mental health.
