Bihar School Timetable to Change from April 6; New Schedule Issued for Students and Teachers

The timetable for all government schools in Bihar has been revised. A “morning shift” schedule has been implemented starting April 6. According to the official order, the school opening time will be 6:30 AM.

In view of the intensifying summer heat in Bihar, the Education Department has taken a significant decision. The morning shift schedule will be enforced across all 80,000 government schools in the state starting April 6. Following the directive issued by the Director of Secondary Education, school timings have been advanced to earlier in the morning to protect students from the scorching sun and heatwaves.

What is the New Timetable?

  • School Arrival and Prayer: 6:30 AM (Prayer and PT sessions will be held from 6:30 AM to 7:00 AM).
  • Commencement of Classes: The first bell will ring at 7:00 AM.
  • Lunch Break: 9:00 AM to 9:40 AM (Mid-Day Meals will be served to students during this interval).
  • Student Dismissal: 12:20 PM.

Total of 7 Periods for Instruction

To ensure that academic instruction does not suffer, a total of 7 periods have been scheduled. Starting at 7:00 AM, the 7th and final period will conclude at 12:20 PM. Teachers are required to stay back for an additional 10 minutes after the students have been dismissed. During this time, teachers will review the day’s lessons, check homework, and prepare lesson plans for the following day’s classes.

Why Was This Decision Taken?

Every year in Bihar, the intensity of the summer heat begins to rise starting in April. The severe afternoon heat and heatwaves pose a health risk to children, increasing the likelihood of them falling ill. Last year, too, extended holidays had to be declared during May and June due to severe heatwave conditions. Keeping this in mind, the department decided to introduce the morning shift proactively—ensuring both the safety of the children’s health and the continuity of their academic calendar.
