BCI: The Delhi High Court on Monday delivered a significant ruling for law students. The court directed the Bar Council of India to review and amend the mandatory attendance rules for three-year and five-year LLB courses. The court clearly stated that students should not be barred from appearing based on lack of attendance.

A bench of Justices Prabha M. Singh and Amit Sharma issued this order in a case related to the alleged suicide of a student in 2016. The student was barred from appearing in the examination due to poor attendance.

Legal education is not limited to the classroom.
The High Court stated that legal education is not limited to mere rote learning or the classroom. It involves understanding, applying, and effectively using the law. The court further stated that mere physical presence in a classroom is not sufficient for holistic education. It limits students' creative freedom.

Credit for these activities

The High Court bench asked the Bar Council of India to amend its regulations to include student participation as part of academic engagement. The court stated that students should be given credit for participation in activities such as moot courts, seminars, mock trials, debates, and court visits. The court stated that the changes should be in accordance with the New Education Policy 2020 and the UGC Regulations 2023.
