Bakrid School Holiday 2026: Today—May 28, 2026—the significant Islamic festival of Eid-ul-Adha (Bakrid) is being celebrated across the country with immense devotion and enthusiasm. On this special occasion, the festive spirit is palpable across most states of the nation; keeping this in mind, a holiday has been declared for government and private schools and colleges, as well as for government offices and banks. This year, there was considerable confusion regarding the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

Initially, according to the official government calendar, the holiday was scheduled for May 27. However, following the sighting of the moon and the subsequent confirmation of the festival's exact date, several state governments and central departments made last-minute changes to the schedule. From the Union Ministry of Personnel to major states like Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, authorities issued notifications deciding to shift the holiday to May 28 (Thursday) instead of May 27. Consequently, schools, colleges, and government offices remain closed today across most parts of the country.

Why the Confusion Over the Bakrid Holiday?
Typically, the dates for Islamic festivals are determined based on the sighting of the moon. This is why there is sometimes a discrepancy between the holidays listed in the pre-determined government calendar and the actual day on which the festival is celebrated. In the official list of holidays released at the beginning of 2026, the Bakrid holiday was scheduled for May 27. However, once it became clear that Eid-ul-Adha would be celebrated on May 28 across most parts of the country, the holiday schedule was updated at the administrative level.

Schools and Colleges Closed Today in These States, Including Delhi and UP

Today—May 28—educational institutions remain completely closed across several major states of the country. Following orders issued by their respective state governments, all government and private schools and colleges are closed in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, West Bengal, Karnataka, Telangana, and Gujarat. In certain states—such as Punjab, Haryana, and Jammu & Kashmir—the festival was already celebrated on May 27. Summer vacations are currently underway in these northern states. Consequently, this has had no impact on children's studies, as schools are already closed.
**Two-Day Holiday in Some Places; Reduced Leave Quota in Others**

On the occasion of Bakrid, various states have taken decisions based on their respective local conditions. For instance:
**Kerala:** Providing significant relief to students and employees, the state government here has declared a consecutive two-day holiday on both May 27 and May 28.
**West Bengal:** Initially, a two-day holiday was scheduled for May 26 and 27; however, this was subsequently revised to a single day. Consequently, schools and colleges across the state remain closed today—May 28—on account of Bakrid.

**Holiday Today for the Supreme Court, Banks, and Government Offices**
Apart from schools, today is also a holiday for the working population. The Supreme Court, too, had originally scheduled its holiday for May 27, but this was later rescheduled to May 28. Similarly, following an order from the Union Ministry of Personnel, all central government administrative offices located in Delhi—as well as private companies—remain closed today. Furthermore, banking operations have also been suspended for the day. If you had any urgent business to attend to at a bank or a government office, you will have to wait until the next working day.
