When did the UGC recognize part-time PhDs?
In fact, the path to part-time PhDs was opened after the UGC issued a circular on November 7, 2022. In this circular, the UGC has amended the rules related to PhDs. These include changes to the viva voce and thesis submission. Previously, serving employees, including government employees, were required to take study leave to pursue research, i.e., PhDs. However, the changes, effective after November 7, 2022, have exempted this from the requirements.
In addition, the requirements for selecting a supervisor for PhD thesis, appointing retired teachers as guides, and publishing two research papers in the research paper have been exempted. Furthermore, a rule has been made that universities must conduct the viva within a maximum of six months after submitting the research paper. Researchers can also participate in the oral examination online.
