Arunachal Pradesh: The Arunachal Pradesh government has ordered the closure of 386 government schools across the state. The order was issued by the education department on Monday. These schools have not enrolled a single student in the current academic year. The decision has been taken based on data received from the Unified District Information System (UDISE), which analyzed several schools and found that some schools have been closed for years and did not enroll students.
The move is aimed at streamlining the educational structure and making better use of teaching staff and facilities. The closure of these schools has affected almost all districts of the state, especially remote and border areas, such as Kurung Kumey, Tawang, Anjaw, Changlang, and Upper Subansiri.
The list includes primary, upper primary, secondary, and higher secondary government schools, which did not enroll students this year and in previous academic sessions.
Most schools closed in West Kameng.
According to the government notification, West Kameng district has the highest number of 73 schools closed. Besides, 50 schools have been closed in Papum Pare, 31 in West Siang, and 28 each in Upper Subansiri and Siang. Several other districts have also seen 1 to 22 schools being shut.
Education department officials say the closures are part of a larger rationalization effort aimed at consolidating educational resources and improving learning outcomes.
Teachers and non-teaching staff of the closed schools will be redeployed to active schools. Officials also point out that if students had recently joined these closed schools, arrangements will be made to transfer them to nearby functioning schools so that there is no interruption in their education.
This is the second major round of school closures in the state. Last year, the state government shut down 600 schools that were either non-functional or had zero enrolment.
There are a total of 2800 government schools in the state, in which more than 7600 regular teachers are working. This step aims to make proper use of educational resources and take steps for the better future of the students.
