There is a provision to give a stipend to the youth for doing an apprenticeship in a company in the country. For example, no company can make the youth work for free. It hires the youth for an apprenticeship, and in return, a stipend is given. Till now, this stipend has been given at Rs 6800 per month. After the change in rules by the Skill Development Ministry, now the youth will now be paid Rs 12300 per month for an apprentice stipend. In this way, more than an 80% increase has been made in the stipend.

What changes have been made
The Central Skill Development and Industry Ministry has not only increased the apprentice stipend. Along with this, many other changes have also been made regarding apprenticeships. In this regard, the ministry has made changes in the Apprenticeship Rules, 1992. These changes have come to the fore after the 38th Apprentice Council meeting held recently. The council was chaired by Skill Development and Industry Minister Jayant Chaudhary.

Under the changes in the Apprenticeship Rules, 1992, decisions like promoting degree apprenticeship, providing distance or virtual apprenticeship training, expansion of regional boards, and comprehensive coverage of industries have been taken. The notification states that the Skill Ministry has started 'Degree Apprenticeship', which will include all courses with apprenticeship.

Now companies can keep 15% trainees.
As per the changes in the Apprenticeship Rules, 1992, now any company or institute can appoint trainees between 2.5% to 15% of its total capacity, this also includes contract employees, but in this change, a condition has been kept that at least 5% of the total number of posts will be reserved for new trainees and trainees who have received skill certificate. It has been clarified in the notification that if the reserved posts for new trainees cannot be filled, then other trainees can be kept in the vacant posts.
