Allahabad University: Allahabad University's New Rule—Part-time PhDs No Longer Permitted..
Allahabad University, PhD Admissions 2026: Allahabad University has implemented a significant new regulation aimed at further streamlining the process of PhD studies and research. This rule is particularly crucial for students who wish to pursue a part-time PhD alongside a job or other professional commitments. Under the new mandate, students pursuing a part-time PhD will now be required to participate in regular classes, coursework, and research activities for a minimum period of six months. The university believes that this measure will strengthen the academic foundation of research scholars and enable them to gain a deeper understanding of their respective subjects.
**The Major Change for Working Professionals**
For candidates currently holding a job, the most significant change is that they can no longer gain direct admission into a part-time PhD program. They must first complete their PhD coursework in full-time mode. Only after completing this requirement—and provided they hold a regular job and are aged 40 or above—may they apply to switch to the part-time mode of study. This entire process will be subject to scrutiny at multiple levels.
**How Will Proposals Be Approved?**
According to the new regulations, the procedure for obtaining approval for research proposals has also been made more rigorous. First, the concerned department will draft the proposal. The matter will then be forwarded to the Research Degree Committee (RDC) for a thorough review. Once the RDC grants its approval, the final decision will be taken by the Academic Council. Thus, a three-tier approval mechanism involving the Vice-Chancellor, the RDC, and the Academic Council has been established. This decision was recently taken during a meeting of the Academic Council presided over by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sangita Srivastava.
**What Will Be the Impact on Students and Research Scholars?**
The university administration asserts that these new regulations have been introduced with the specific aim of enhancing the quality of research. Students pursuing a part-time PhD will now be required to actively participate in regular classes and research activities, thereby deepening their understanding and academic insight. However, those who wish to pursue a PhD alongside their employment must first complete their coursework in full-time mode; the option to switch to part-time mode will become available only thereafter.
