The path has been cleared for a 2-year service extension for Agniveers. Now, 75% of Agniveers who do not transition into the regular army after completing their initial 4-year tenure will be given the opportunity to serve for an additional 2 years.

Agniveer: The Modi government has offered a significant gift to Agniveers ahead of Diwali. The way has been paved for a 2-year service extension. Consequently, 75% of Agniveers who do not join the regular army after their initial 4-year term will now have the chance to serve for another 2 years. The central government and the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General N.S. Raja Subramani, announced this decision regarding the service tenure of Agniveers during a press conference, which was attended by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The proposal was approved during a Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, effectively increasing the total tenure for Agniveers from 4 years to 6 years. This new decision brings major relief to approximately 18,300 Agniveers whose 4-year terms are set to conclude between November and December 2026.

New Government Framework for Agniveers

Under the original rules of the Agnipath scheme, only 25% of Agniveers were to be inducted into the permanent cadre based on merit and qualifications after completing 4 years of service, while the remaining 75% were to be discharged. However, the government has now introduced a significant policy change, deciding to grant a 2-year service extension to the remaining 75% of Agniveers.

Who will receive the 2-year extension?

The government has announced a 2-year service extension for 75 percent of Agniveers. However, opting for this 2-year extension will be entirely at the discretion of the individual Agniveers; no pressure will be exerted on any soldier to continue their service for an additional two years. Those who choose the 2-year extension will receive the benefit of increased pay and other allowances during this period.

How will the extension be determined?

According to information provided by the government and the armed forces, the evaluation process for the permanent induction and extension of Agniveers will be completely transparent. It has been noted that the performance, discipline, physical fitness, and technical skills of these soldiers have been continuously assessed over the past four years, yielding very positive feedback. As per the existing policy, 25 percent of the top-performing Agniveers will be directly inducted into the armed forces. Meanwhile, the 75 percent who receive the 2-year extension will also be eligible to apply for permanent induction into the regular armed forces after completing a total of six years of service—provided they meet the prescribed criteria and pass the necessary eligibility examinations.

Tenure of the first batch nearing completion

The Agnipath scheme was launched on June 14, 2022. Under this initiative, the first batch—comprising approximately 24,400 Agniveers—was recruited into the Army, Navy, and Air Force. This included about 19,000 Agniveers in the Army, 2,850 in the Air Force, and 2,550 in the Navy. Among these, the first batch from the Indian Navy was set to complete its four-year tenure on November 21, 2026, the Air Force batch on December 21, 2026, and the first batch from the Army on December 31, 2026.
