Age and Attempt Limits to be Set for NEET Exam! Find Out How Many Attempts Are Allowed and Up to What Age..
NTA New Rules for NEET UG Exam: Amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding the NEET UG 2026 examination, the National Testing Agency (NTA) is now preparing to implement major changes. The NTA has indicated to a Parliamentary Committee of the Central Government that, in the near future, rules regarding age limits and the number of attempts (attempt limits) may be introduced for the NEET examination. This implies that students will henceforth be able to take the medical entrance exam only up to a prescribed age and within a limited number of attempts.
**Attempt Limit May Be Imposed on NEET for the First Time**
Currently, there is no fixed limit on the number of attempts for the NEET UG examination; students are free to take the exam as many times as they wish. However, the NTA is now preparing to alter this existing system. The Parliamentary Committee was informed that, based on the recommendations of an expert committee, an attempt limit may be implemented for the examination. Consequently, students will have only a limited number of opportunities in the future.
**Preparations to Set an Upper Age Limit as Well**
At present, the NEET UG examination only stipulates a minimum age requirement of 17 years; there is no upper age limit. However, the NTA is now also considering establishing a maximum age limit. This would mean that students would be ineligible to take the NEET examination once they have crossed a certain age threshold. Nevertheless, the specific maximum age limit has not yet been clarified.
**Major Changes Initiated Following the Paper Leak Controversy**
The NEET UG 2026 examination sparked a nationwide controversy. Allegations surfaced that several questions went viral before the exam, and these questions subsequently matched those in the actual question paper. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently conducting an inquiry into this matter. Amidst these developments, the Parliamentary Committee on Education summoned NTA officials and raised several questions regarding the examination system.
During the meeting, the NTA asserted that the paper had not leaked from within its own system; however, it acknowledged that certain questions had indeed been circulating before the examination. The agency further explained that, in light of these irregularities, the decision to conduct a re-examination was taken with the objective of upholding student trust and confidence.
**Emphasis Now on CBT Mode and Multi-Session Exams**
The NTA informed the Parliamentary Committee that several significant changes may be introduced to the NEET examination in the near future. These potential changes include options such as a Computer-Based Test (CBT) format, multi-session examinations, and multi-stage examinations. These changes were suggested by former ISRO Chairman K.
According to the NTA, over 2.2 million students appeared for the NEET UG 2026 examination held on May 3. Subsequently, it came to light that approximately 120 questions from an alleged ‘guess paper’ matched those in the actual examination. Following this revelation, the exam was cancelled on May 12, and the matter was handed over to the CBI. The re-examination is now scheduled to be conducted on June 21.
**Controversy Over the Term ‘Paper Leak’**
During a meeting of the parliamentary committee, BJP MPs raised objections regarding the use of the term ‘paper leak.’ They argued that this terminology should not be employed until the investigation is complete. Conversely, opposition MPs questioned why the examination was cancelled if, in fact, no paper leak had occurred.
