After PhD, GATE Scores Now Valid for M.Tech Admissions Too: Delhi University’s Major Decision
For the first time, Delhi University has decided to prioritize GATE scores for admission into its M.Tech programs. If seats remain unfilled after the GATE-based admission process, the remaining vacancies will be filled based on the CUET-PG merit list.
Delhi University (DU) has taken a significant decision regarding students pursuing technical education. Effective immediately, GATE scores will be utilized for the first time to grant admission into the university’s M.Tech courses. Until now, GATE scores were primarily used for admissions into IITs, NITs, and other technical institutions; however, Delhi University has now joined this list.
Notably, this does not mean the end of opportunities for students who do not possess a GATE score. The university has clarified that if seats remain vacant, admissions will also be granted based on CUET-PG scores. Consequently, this decision brings new hope to thousands of engineering students.
This marks the first time in Delhi University’s history that GATE scores will be given priority for admission into a postgraduate degree program. According to the university’s Dean of Admissions, Haneet Gandhi, GATE scores were previously used solely for PhD admissions; however, they will now be utilized for M.Tech courses as well. The university will first prepare a merit list of candidates holding valid GATE scores and proceed with seat allocation based on that list.
Decision Taken Following AICTE Approval
The university clarified that the M.Tech program itself is not new; the course has been in existence for some time. However, it recently received approval from the AICTE—the All India Council for Technical Education. Following this approval, changes were implemented in the admission process to incorporate GATE scores. It is anticipated that this move will enhance both the quality of the course and the level of competition for admission.
Who Can Apply?
To apply for this course, candidates must hold a B.Tech, B.E., B.Sc. (Engineering), M.Sc., or an equivalent degree. Furthermore, the degree must be in a relevant technical discipline. These disciplines include Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, and Radio Physics and Electronics Engineering. Students who have obtained their degree from a recognized university or institution are eligible to apply.
Admissions to be Conducted for a Total of 30 Seats
Delhi University has allocated a total of 30 seats for this M.Tech course. Of these, 13 seats are reserved for the General category, 8 for the OBC category, 4 for the SC category, 2 for the ST category, and 3 for the EWS category. Admission across all categories will be granted strictly on the basis of merit.
Path Remains Open for CUET-PG Candidates as Well
The University has clarified that students who have qualified in the CUET-PG examination are also eligible to apply for this course. However, during the seat allocation process, priority will be given to candidates possessing a valid GATE score. Should any seats remain vacant in any category, those seats will be filled based on the merit of candidates from the CUET-PG 2026-27 cycle. In other words, students who have not appeared for the GATE examination can also harbor hopes of securing admission to this course.
Admissions Will Not Be Conducted via the CSAS-PG Portal
Delhi University has further clarified that admission to this M.Tech course will not be processed through the CSAS-PG portal—unlike the standard PG admission procedure. Instead, the University will launch a separate, dedicated portal specifically for this purpose, through which interested students may submit their applications. This approach ensures that the entire admission process is conducted in a manner tailored to the specific requirements of a technical course.
