There is a major update regarding the chapter on the judiciary in the Class 8 Social Science textbook published by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). A new committee will now be responsible for drafting the chapter on the judiciary for the Class 8 textbook. Following a stern rebuke from the Supreme Court, the NCERT has constituted a new syllabus committee specifically to prepare this chapter, while simultaneously disbanding the previous syllabus committee. This entire matter revolves around a chapter in the Class 8 Social Science textbook that dealt with the issue of corruption within the judiciary. Following objections raised by the Supreme Court, the NCERT was compelled to remove this chapter and recall all copies of the textbooks. Furthermore, the online sale of these books has been suspended. The textbook is currently being revised and prepared anew.

Let us take a look at the composition of this new NCERT committee. We will also examine the latest updates regarding the previous committee. Let us understand this entire matter in detail.

**NCERT Inducts Four New Experts into the Committee**
The syllabus for NCERT textbooks is determined by a high-level National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC). The committee currently comprises 20 members. The new inductees include V. Kamakoti, Director of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras; Raghuvendra Tanwar, Chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR); R. Venkata Rao, former Vice-Chancellor of the National Law School of India University (NLSIU); and Amarendra Prasad Behera, Joint Director-in-Charge of the Central Institute of Educational Technology (CIET) at NCERT. Previously, the committee consisted of 22 members.

**Three Members Removed**
Following the Supreme Court's directive, three members have been removed from the NSTC. These include Michel Danino, a former Guest Professor at IIT Gandhinagar; M.D. Srinivas, Chairman of the Chennai-based Centre for Policy Studies, and the late Bibek Debroy, former Chairman of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council. A senior official stated that the NSTC has been reconstituted with necessary adjustments to strengthen its functioning. The Committee is empowered to develop the school curriculum and instructional materials—including textbooks for grades 3 through 12—and, if necessary, to appropriately revise the existing textbooks for grades 1 and 2 to ensure a smooth transition from Grade 2 to Grade 3.
